What we do

Investments

Motherwell Investments Limited actively identifies and invests in high-potential small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Uganda and the broader East African region. We focus on businesses that demonstrate strong growth potential, job creation capacity, and the ability to drive socio-economic impact.

Our investment strategy targets sectors such as agribusiness, education, manufacturing, clean energy, and service industries. We typically focus on early-stage and growth-stage businesses, with investment ticket sizes ranging from USD 50,000 to USD 500,000.

Beyond capital injection, Motherwell provides hands-on strategic guidance and technical support to its investee companies, ensuring their long-term sustainability and scalability.

Research and Grants Unit – Our Flagship Division

Recognizing the critical role of grant funding in catalyzing development impact, Motherwell Investments Limited has positioned the Research and Grants Unit as a flagship division within the company.

This unit specializes in supporting development organizations, higher education institutions, community-based organizations, and social enterprises to access, manage, and report on donor-funded projects.

Key Focus Areas of the Research and Grants Unit include:

  1. Grant Proposal Development:
We help  organizations design strong, donor-aligned proposals that stand out in competitive funding environments. Our team understands the nuances of different donor requirements, including bilateral, multilateral, and private foundations.
  2. Project Design and Implementation Support:
Motherwell works with clients to develop project frameworks with clear goals, outputs, and outcomes. This ensures that projects are both feasible and aligned with donor expectations.
  3. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL):
We support grantees in developing MEL frameworks that track project performance, learning, and accountability. This includes designing indicators, data collection tools, and reporting templates.
  4. Donor Reporting and Compliance:
Motherwell provides technical support in preparing high-quality donor reports, ensuring that project achievements, lessons learned, and financials meet donor compliance standards.
  5. Capacity Building for Grant Management:
We conduct training sessions and workshops to build internal capacity for organizations that want to improve their grant management, reporting, and project delivery systems.

Since its establishment, the Research and Grants Unit has worked with a range of stakeholders, including higher education institutions, NGOs, and government agencies. Our support has led to the successful mobilization of funding for infrastructure projects, research initiatives, and social development programs.
